user with two cell phones

With traditional land lines going out of fashion in favor of cell phones for consumers across the US (USA Today), and data plan pricing on the verge of rising (Business Week), it seems like time to ask a key question about company cellular expenditures. Does your company need to pay for employee cell phones?

Speeding Up that iPhone 3G

my iPhone 3G

I’ve needed my iPhone 3G to do quite a bit more lately and came to a shocking conclusion, device lifetimes are getting WAY too short for me! As I am a very conservative buyer, I plan on looking for some options to replace it in the upcoming year. First, I decided to see if I can push the 3G’s lifetime a bit further and gathered 3 tips that I have tested with 2 iPhones. These may restrict the utility, but if your iPhone is as bad off as mine was, you are at zero utility anyway.

Shared Voice Services Image

3 Companies Invest in a Shared Phone System to Significantly Cut Costs with VOIP Services

Client Description: 3 Clients in a shared building utilize a Managed VOIP System on site. Lines and VoIP Support are provided by Telewebtech over a Cable broadband connection.

Summary: Clients requested a voice system that would allow them to combine services while maintaining individual lines and auto attendants in order to cut costs by using VoIP services. Telewebtech provided a combined services quote with unlimited nationwide minutes and a partitioned invoice structure for the building partnership. This client was offered a SaaS (System as a Service) option with an average telephone service spend per user of under $15.00 per user monthly because of their low call concurrency. Telewebtech solutions were necessary to correct interoffice networking and ISP connectivity issues present in the group’s network. Continue reading

Japan's Networks Survive Crisis

Donate Money to Japan Relief Efforts

Avoid donation scams and misallocation of funds. Donate funds to the American Red Cross.

Having lived almost 4 years in Japan, 3 in Tokyo, I’ve spent the last week trying to communicate to friends and family in the Tokyo area. There are several friends from Saitama, the affected area, that have not yet responded and I worry about. Though the immediate effects of the earthquake seems to have only rattled those I’ve been able to get in touch with, the looming nuclear crisis is present on their mind. It was while scanning my Inbox for responses that I immediately put this article aside, Japan’s Internet largely intact after earthquake, tsunami, and wanted to consider it.

Phone Systems and VOIP for Startups

Though often the last thing on an entrepreneurs mind, starting a company requires planning and deciding upon infrastructure, including phone systems. Choosing quality solutions that cut initial costs and can grow with a start up business is essential to long term profitability. Though VOIP telephone service can cost up to 60% less than traditional phone service, it can also cost more if the chosen solution’s pricing is not flexible or requires too much initial investment. Having been part of three start ups myself, I put together 3 guidelines concerning how to save money, time, and have a future-forward VOIP system in place.

Free Wi-Fi the Worldover

Adael WiFi Hotspot in France

One of the least secure ways to handle data is joining open Wi-Fi hotspots; however, working on the road requires an endless use of whatever connection one can get. So, as I’ve been the ever present Euro-Road-Warrior this past month, I thought I would abide by 5 guidelines for Wi-Fi security. The sources I used to put together my 5 part list are 10 Tips for Road Warriors, Techcrunch, 5 Tips for Protecting Your Computer, Travel and Leisure, and Six essential Apple iPhone security tips, Mac World (because I am much more likely to connect with my iPhone).

Small Business Slow to Adopt VOIP

Despite the cost benefits of VOIP (Voice over IP) technology, the study found 70 percent of small businesses are not using VOIP for business calls. Almost nine in 10 (87%) small business professionals are somewhat or not at all familiar with the term “unified communications,” which is the integration of voice, video, audio and instant messaging tools.
eWeek.com: Businesses Engaging in Risky Technology Behavior: Survey

Crossing Cables, Phone and NetworkThe most interesting part of this technology review may not have had anything to do with its title (Businesses Engaging in Risky Technology Behavior: Survey)! The review found that small businesses are simply unfamiliar with VOIP and Unified communications. Most likely, this represents the newness of the technology, but also the fact that while larger enterprises have hired specialists, traditional providers have not ventured to make VOIP to the Desktop Systems work. As a result, even many of the newer IP Phone Systems my company sees in the market do not encompass the benefits VOIP.

Work from Anywhere

icon with map of France A claim of VOIP and its salesmen is that VOIP to the Desktop can help create better opportunities for work-life balance. The expectations and concepts behind work-life balance may not be entirely agreed upon; however, for those of you who think going to work should not necessitate going into the office – I’ve begun a very important test. I’ll spend the next few months living in Paris, working from an apartment using WiFi. Disclaimer: No one asked me to actually work while I am here (but they didn’t stop sending emails and leaving messages either).
